Unopened Broadcast (Newsletter, Surveys, Bulletins, etc.) to club mailing list

A couple of weeks ago, I was going through the mailing list, looking for anyone that has not opened any mail (newsletter, surveys, questionnaires, bulletins, etc.) and I found 23 people. So I put a stop sending broadcast to those 23 people.

The result as the last broadcast on June 21st showed a 100% open status. But a pond closer review, I found that 15 people didn’t open the broadcast (newsletter). So I wrote a message to Aweber Tech Support to find out what was going on. This is what I wrote and their comments below.

Jim summit questions to Aweber:
Discrepancy reporting

I took a closer look at my broadcast status. I noticed on 6-21-11 that my
broadcast went out to 46 people on this list and 46 people opened the
mailing (broadcast) showing a 100% open. But when I looked at the “Did Not
Open” status, it showed that 15 people hadn’t open this broadcast. In
theory, it should have shown a 32% open rate [15/46X100].

So the question is – why the discrepancy?

As a Note: I contacted a couple of the people on the “did not open” list
and they say they did open it. What I am trying to do is thin out my list
of those that have not opened any broadcast in over the last three month
according the broadcast stats.

Aweber’s Response:

The opens on that page are unique opens, if you click on report
then click on the “Opened” button, you will see that some subscribers
have opened it multiple times. Each of these opens is included
in the total number of Opens.

We can track opens for plain text messages, however that is only possible
if a link in the message has been clicked.

For example, with HTML based messages, the way we track clicks is through
a 1×1 pixel image being displayed to the subscriber.

If the HTML message is received, but images are not ‘enabled’ we will not
track an open because the image is not displayed.

With plain text we track opens based on what we call an ‘inferred open.’
This means that if a link has been clicked in the plain text version, it is
inferred that the message was opened by the subscriber so we will report
an open for that subscriber.

*If you only send out in plain text, you may see more clicks than opens because
a subscriber may click on that link or multiple links more than once but we
will only track the open once for that subscriber.

So I will need to go back and look at the stats again and in the meantime, Un-check the 23 people I had marked for removal.
