Well due to the last two helicopter/gyro events, I have decided to start back working on my Rotorway Exec helicopter. I just notice that I had stopped working on it back in October of 2009 – boy time fly’s.

Anyway, this weekend, I cleaned (will re-arranged) out my garage so I can take an inventor off all my helicopter parts. Back in 2009, when I was forced to move out of the hanger I was renting. So I had put all the parts in boxes and over time they got lost in all the grap I had stuffed here and their in my garage.

I also needed a clean work space in my garage to work on the small things, like modifying my water intake manifold for the water pump I want to use on my helicopter engine. I have a spare engine in my garage, so I don’t need to run down to my present hanger – Sharing space in Dan Van Dusens’ hanger.

After I get the garage in order, I plan on working on the body. I still need to do some cutting on it, putting in permanent screw holes and a quick paint job wouldn’t hurt either.

So I would like to hear from the rest of you builder on your progress, if nothing else to just keep me motivated.

Note that you can see all project by going to the Category drop down box.

Jim’s heavy art!

From time to time I am asked why I get depressed when writing the clubs newsletter. Will a good example would be this past week. You see I spent almost 6 hours preparing the newsletter coverage on the “Meet Jon Our Local Gyro CFI” day. It takes time to format you videos so YouTube will accept them and another source I use – Amazon S3 storage for video.

What you guys my not know is that I have tracking software that allows me to follow activity on the clubs website and YouTube or any other social media that I maybe using. So back to last week’s newsletter, as mentioned, I spend almost 6 hours preparing it and was sent out last Monday night to 82 members on the emailing list. After a week I notice that only 13 people (at the time of this writing) have viewed the two videos – which probably means only 13 people read the newsletter.

So why do I get depressed – last week was 6 hours I could have been doing something else. Why put so much time into a newsletter if no one is going to read it.

Already today I have invested 3 hours preparing this week’s newsletter covering the Central Sierra Helicopter meet and writing this – get it off my chest thing. It takes even more time if no one sends me anything to put in the newsletter and I have to scratch around to find something to write about. As of lately, only John Parks has been giving me anything to write about.

Jewgo is a good example of someone that could be sending me stories or update. Jewgo has been doing run-up testing on his gyro on the funny farm runway. He reports “at the club meeting” he has vibration problems at certain rpm’s. Why not write something up about your problem and send it to me so I could have something to share with the whole club.

There are many of you out there, just like Jewgo, working on your rotorcraft project or just flying around in your rotorcraft having a good old time. Why not sure it with the club and give me something to write about.

So now you know what I get pissed off or depressed at times when it comes to writing the clubs newsletter.

See yah next week – jim

P.S. Oh by the way – it has now been a little over 5 and since I began write this week’s newsletter.

The Central Sierra Helicopter Meet held last week end (May 4 through 6th) was great. The weather was suburb and a great turnout of helicopters. There were heli-cycles galore and several Rotorway plus a Robinson R22 and R44’s and a Bell 47

I (jim burrow), Jewgo and Darrel Graves were the only club members there without helicopters. John Quitter, Hap Miller, Grant all had a good time flying there helicopters all day long.

This is the 8th meet of the Central Sierra Helicopter Meet and the field conditions were great. In the past, there were years when it rained on the event making the ground to muddy to walk on. Other times it was very cold, but this year it was T-shirts all the way.

So onto my report of the 8th Central Sierra Helicopter Meet. Note that due to the size of the photos I put this report into a PDF. If you don’t have a adobe PDF read, get one, it free from adobe.

This past Sunday – 29 April 2012 – several club members got together at Jewgo’s hanger at the Funny Farm Air strip (Jewgo’s Air Ranch).

Did you know that there is a difference between a Gyro-plane and a Gyro-copter?

This post is just a brief for I don’t have all the photos and videos ready to show you. Perhaps next week I will have everything and will be able to share this great event with you.

After the two hour Q and A – we retreaded out to Jon’s Gyro-plan an Air and Space 18A which by the way, there are only 8 flying and Jon has two of them.

It was a great day for a gathering. Not to hot and not to cold. It would have been a great day for a BBQ along with the fantastic information that Jon laid upon us.

Many thank’s to Jon for flying in and answering all our questions.

Next week I will have a more up today summary of this event.

And one last thing – Don’t forget about the Central Sierra Helicopter Meet next weekend. It too will be informative with lots of different helicopters there to watch fly about.

Jim, here is the article about Tanner, minus the picture. If you go to” The Trinity Journal”, at the bottom right side of the page, you type in Tanner Parks in the search bar, and you can get article and the picture that goes with it. I am not computer literate so maybe you can get the whole thing to post, thanks,
-Parks-

The Article by Parks

The Hayward Air Rally, the longest continually-held proficiency flying event in North America, has selected four California and Oregon teenagers — including Tanner Parks, 14, of Weaverville Elementary School — to receive fully-paid scholarships, to include tuition and roundtrip airfare, to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Air Academy for the summer 2012 program.

The Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wis., is an aviation-oriented in-residence summer camp for students to develop and explore their interest in aviation. These camps provide the foundation for a lifelong love of aviation as well as the opportunity to create friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

Parks received his votes from Redding’s EAA chapter 157, and Corning’s EAA chapter 1148. He was chosen because of his continued volunteer involvement with the Young Eagles program, helping as a ground crew member for the past four years, and his help with the fundraising efforts of EAA chapter 157 in Redding as a pancake cook at Benton Airport’s Father’s Day event, and here in Weaverville at Parks Arcs Welding with the appliance collection site. Parks Arcs Welding, the Parks family and several local kids have helped in disassembling of appliances donated for recycling and the group has now donated more than $2,000 to the Local Redding chapter’s EAA 157, money earmarked for the Young Eagles program.

Parks has been taking helicopter flying lessons at Air Shasta Rotor and Wing, and was able to hold a steady hover on his last lesson. Dave Everson, owner of Air Shasta, has donated flight instruction to Tanner on several “dead head” cross-county flights, some as far away as Sacramento area, to further his flight training. Some of the career options the young Parks is considering are CHP flight ops, U.S. Air Force search and recovery, and helicopter logging.

The Parks family said it is grateful to all of the people who have made this possible.

“It is people like this that make a difference for our local youth and build strong communities,” father John Parks said.

In partnership with local chapters of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the International Organization of Women Pilots Inc. (aka 99s), the Hayward Air Rally also awarded scholarships to Amanda Feriante of Fremont, Calif.; Kira Olson of Palo Cedro, Calif.; and Devan Simpkins of Bend, Ore.

EAA Chapters VAA29 in Hayward, EAA1148 in Corning, EAA157 in Redding, EAA1345 in Bend, Ore., and EAA617 in Prineville, Ore., as well as the Mount Shasta and Alameda County Chapters of the 99s made significant cash donations to support the overall scholarship project.

Hello – My name is Jeb and I am a member of the PRA chapter 62. I have moved here to the Hayward area for a construction job J R Stark put turned me on to your website and chapter. I was just wondering when you are having your next club meeting. And if there are any gyro CFI’s in this area.

Thanks
Jeb Baker

Editor’s comment or reply

Hi Jeb! – I just looked and I didn’t see your name on our club roster. So I would suggest that you go back to the clubs website and opt-in to our mailing list. That way you will receive our weekly newsletter (I call it the weekly club updates). Our next club meeting will probably be in May, but it is still up in the air due to the 7th Annual Central Sierra Helicopter meet the first weekend in May.

As for a Gyro CFI, we have one in the club and he lives near San Jose. It’s kinda funny for his name is Jon Stark, but he is a school teacher and not in construction.

If you join the club today – 9 April 2012 – you will catch the next newsletter that goes out tonight. However, you can also read it by clicking on the latest posts located on the far right side of the page.

For other bits of information – We are a helicopter and Gyro club located at the Livermore Airport. We have close to 80 members throughout the world with the big chuck of them in the Bay Area (2 hour driving time to Livermore) and have been a club since 1982. We are Chapter 58 with PRA.

As far as Gyro-planes go, our Club President – Jewgo Min – has one and he lives in Foster City, just across the San Mateo bride. His email is jewgo@netzero.net if you would like to contact him. He’s a nice guy too!

Hope to meet you soon!

I finally received a reply from Jon after 5 days, Jim.

In view of the rains predicted for all this week, I am planning the gyro meeting for 1100/29 Apr 12 at my air-ranch and hope Jon and JP will be able to attend, otherwise he said they can attend on 22 Apr 12. JP is also a gyro CFI.

They will be flying the AS-18 gyro which can take-off from a stand-still and land on almost a dime. I would not recommend the member flying in to be using a gyro other than an AS-18, such as a Sparrowhawk. Helicopters are OK.

No problem with free rides for the members so John Parks will be happy about that.

If you have a list of the members attending, please send it to me so I can check if I have anyone to add to the list.

I'll confirm the date as soon as I hear from Jon.

Jewgo

Read the whole Newsletter here as a PDF

This came across the Editors Desk last week:

Hey Jim – As an FYI, I cannot open the PDF files – I get a “Damaged File” notice. It probably is because you are using a newer V9 or later copy of Acrobat and it is not backward compatible with the older versions of Acrobat. Sooo, if you could also keep the older format available for access it would be appreciated.

And here’s a reply to the above from another club member:

You should be able to download the free latest version of Adobe “Reader” that will let you open and read any version of PDFs or Acrobat.

Here’s the main link: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Editors Comment:

With respect to the format that is used to creating the clubs newsletter each week – I call it “up dates to club activities” – are listed below:

Database – The websites database has over 2000 post and is getting extremely large to manage, with respect to backup and general maintenance. If I crash the database, I lose all the articles and etc. So this is one reason to switching back to using Adobe (Acrobat) PDF to create my articles.

PDF – With respect to the newsletter, I have been asked to have then in as a PDF because some members find it inconvenient to keep clicking on each post. And others prefer the newsletter to be in a PDF form because they like to print them out and read it offline.

Adobe/Acrobat – As for my software, I have the latest versions and or update. I have instructed Adobe not to bug me about any updates, “Just do it”. So for me there is no going back to any older version. Sure I can have two computers, one for each version of Adobe, but that take more time and again eats up memory on the hard drive by having two copies of the same articles – one for each version of the PDF.

Work Load – I’ve been the clubs editor for 12 years now (it was meant to be a one to two year post ) and I’m getting tired of spending several hours a week creating newsletters and doing website management. Example – it has taking me over two hours writing what you are reading now and I still have to proof read it (which means I have to come back to it in an hour or two in order to try and catch all my errors) and upload it to the website and make sure all the links are working. And of course this is not counting the half hour or so going through my email and collecting all the email to the editor. Don’t get me wrong, without your email to me, I have nothing to write about in our newsletter. So from time to time, there will be no newsletter for that week if I don’t get any email.

About Me – As for me, I’m supposed to be retired and not working for some low paying scum bag job. (You young guys don’t know what that is like yet, trying to find work when you are in your sixties and still need to make ends meet because retirement income isn’t making it any more in today’s economy)

So I’ve been spending almost 100% of my spare time learning Internet Marketing and some day (soon I hope) be able to tell my scum bag job employer to kiss my ass, I’m out of there.

My remaining life is starting to get short and there is still a lot of thing I would like to do, but requires more money to do those things and an almost minimum paying job doesn’t cut the mustard. The moral of the story is that I am spending very little of my time being devoted to the editor’s post for the club.

So the reality of it all is that it is time for the club to start thinking about replacing “Jimmy boy” here. There are now 78 members in the club – based on the clubs emailing list roster. Surely, there must be one of you willing not to have a life for a year or two and take over the clubs editors post!
